It's all about the grain
If you're looking at medium format film then you've probably been taking photos for a while or have just clicked on the wrong link. Therefore, if this gets technical at any point, I do not apologise.
Fuji's Velvia has been the benchmark for many a year but times they may be a changing. In the past there was the balance between highest quality of image or a faster more useful film speed. This means I was usually debating between a 50 or 100. 50 as best for lanscapes on a tripod, 100 for the rest.
The quality of the Provia 100 film is fantastic. I used to use it in 35 mm format and it was great. The 6x7 transparencies I now get from a Pentax II are just breathtaking.
It is hard to see any difference between the 50 and the 100 film speed on the transparency. That extra speed, however, does mean that I can manage a lot more tripod free shots in good weather without significant camera shake. This is perfect for travel photography when you dont have time to start setting up tripods and reflectors. It means that I hardly use Velvia anymore and just stick to the faster more vibrant Provia.
The only thing I would say is that, if you have a camera that can take it, buy the 220 rolls. Buy them in boxes of five. In fact, buy multiple boxes and get out there and take some photos. You're not going to be disappointed with the results.
