Canon's IXUS range of cameras has always been strong, and the IXUS 400 continues that tradition.

The four-megapixel Canon Ixus 400 digital camera is capable of taking still images at 2,272 x 1,704 pixels--enough for a good quality A4 print. Resolutions go down to 640 x 480 for images you might only want to look at digitally. You can also capture video at 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels.

The camera is very small indeed--smaller than earlier IXUS models, and is easily pocket sized. There is what at first might seem a bewildering array of buttons around the casing, but in fact these provide excellent one-button-press access to most of the most used features, such as the 3x optical zoom which goes up to 11x when combined with digital zoom features, the macro mode, settings for the flash and self timer. For more advanced features such as changing the shutter speed, which is great to be able to do on a digital camera, you do need to delve into the LED a little further.

Images are stored on Compact Flash card--the largest image can be a couple of megabytes in size so you'll need to think big when it comes to CF card size with this camera. The battery is removable, and a spare to carry in the pocket might be a good idea.

Canon supplies a range of desktop software for viewing, editing and making use of your digital images. As with previous IXUS cameras, one of the tools works with the Stitch Assist mode on the camera itself in the production of panorama shots. --Sandra Vogel

A great little digital camera
I have just bought the Canon Ixus 400 having spent many happy hours researching digital cameras on the web and via magazines. I determined that I basically needed a small point and shoot camera but one that produced good quality output and had a degree of manual controls if I wanted to get a bit more adventurous. Many of the camera reviews I found pointed me towards the Ixus 400 and all of the reviews of the camera itself were highly complementary.
Well, now I've taken the plunge and bought one I can only say that I am delighted with my choice. I think I have bought the perfect small digital camera.
Using it is really easy and it does indeed produce excellent results. I added a 256K memory card and at the highest resolution (A4 size prints) I can store an amazing 120 shots in the camera without having to download.
One of my favourite features is being able to zoom into the picture I have just taken in playback mode. This helps in reviewing and deciding whether or not to keep the shot.
The camera is really quick to turn on and use. The controls are relatively self explanatory although as a digital novice I do admit that the user manual is rather complex as it has so many features of the camera to convey. I also added a small case for the camera which is also excellent as it is designed to fit onto a belt and given the size of the Ixus it makes it a doddle to take everywhere with me.
I am expecting that this camera will last me for several years to come and it has already enabled me to take some great shots of my holiday in California.
If you are looking for a good quality digital point and shoot camera this one comes highly recommended from me at least! Buy one - you wont regret it.

Canon IXUS 400
I was a little apprehensive spending this sort of money on a camera, but I am not disappointed. After a quick 2 hours charge I began playing. Some of the functionality was a little daunting at first, but I think I'd mastered most of it after a couple of hours. Love the way it helps you line up panoramic shots for stitching together later on the PC. Movie mode was pleasant surprise, which I ended up using on the camera's first serious outing to good effect. The supplied 32mb Flash card was soon full, so I'd recommend getting some extra memory. Not so sure about the need for a spare battery yet as it seems to cope with all I throw at it (compared with my "old" 1.3m pixel camera which ate AA batteries by the bucketfull).

When connected to the PC via USB it all seems very quick. The software provided is pretty basic (didn't get on with the movie software - so resorted to stuff I already had). The camera has the abilty to be powered by a transformer (not included) - pity.

So overall it's a thumbs up for the IXUS 400. Pity about the mains transformer and NO CASE (come on Canon - a case for pity's sake!).

Buy with Confidence
Firstly, the build quality of this tiny camera is fantastic- full metal jacket!, the lens is incredible (3x optical zoom), and the colour realism is the best I've ever seen on a digital camera. Canon have produced yet another great ixus, but this time with a massive 4 mega pixels. The anti red eye is greatly improved (I've currently taken about 400 pictures and not seen one red eye yet!), and the detail is stunning - especially on Macro mode, (with large settings @ super-fine), I took a photo of a small house spider, and on my monitor it looks like it was the size of a bath tub! and you can see every hair on every leg.

The Automatic intelligent focus (9 point) seems flawless too

Another improvement is that the Ixus battery now lasts longer because the camera is less power hungry, also night-shots on manual settings are crystal clear if you've got a tripod (or a seriously steady hand!)
fantastic camera!, deserves to be the market leader.
