The Canon MV600i Mini-DV digital camcorder delivers advanced features and style, while still being both affordable and simple to use.

This digital dream is compact and extremely comfortable to hold, with a well thought-out layout of controls, including customisable illuminated buttons. It looks the part too, and is complemented with some serious technical wizardry in its guts, which includes an 800K pixel CCD and 18x optical zoom.

The 1/6" 800K pixel CCD facilitates high-quality digital movie footage, plus good-quality still images. The photo button can be used to store digital stills onto tape, which you can later transfer. Unlike the Canon MV650i, there isn't the convenience of an MMC card slot. This camcorder also features a high-performance two-sided aspheric Canon lens with optical 18x / digital 360x zoom.

This model has both DV In and Out (FireWire) sockets, making it an ideal camcorder for those wanting to edit their footage on a home computer. There is also an analogue-digital converter and analogue line in--great if you want to transfer old VHS cassettes to digital tape. The camera's Multi Architecture Camera System helps to optimise the best quality image settings for movies and stills. Additional features include night mode, programmed auto exposure, advanced in-camera editing and much more.

The Canon MV600i comes supplied with a remote control, two AA batteries, lens cap and lens cap cord, shoulder strap, Lithium button battery, BP-512 battery pack, CA-570 compact power adapter, STV-250N Stereo video cable, PC-A10 SCART adapter, Digital Video solution software disc.

The MV600i offers exceptional value for money. Those looking for even more features may want to consider the Canon MV650i, but whichever option you go for you'll end up with a great camcorder. --Nick Baxter

MV600i
Canon MV600i

I read all the video magazines for about 3 months before buying. For the low to mid range buyer there seemed to be only one logical choice. The Canon MV 600 range. Reviewers all praised the ergonomics, the handling and the picture quality. Having bought one I can add. The ease of operation is superb. If your' in a hurry, it's quick to set to full automatic mode, and the results are great. If you've got time and want to manually set the camera up, fine that's really easy too and the results superb. The large buttons on the upper face have dual functions, transport and manual override. Press the play button whilst in camera mode and you can manually adjust the focus with the thumbwheel knob at the lower right of the camera. Press the stop button and exposure can be adjusted. Manually setting the white balance is very easy but it would be better if it could be directly accessed from the transport buttons.

Compared to other camcorders the Canon is not pretty, but pick it up. It's really satisfying and comfortable to hold. The zoom and transport motors are virtually silent and the microphone quite amazingly sensitive. Some magazines have criticized the image stabilizer, saying that it was ineffective. This is not the case. Usually image stabilizers degrade the picture quality. Switching them on and off has an obvious effect. The image stabilizer on the MV600i is subtle and does not degrade the image. Zooming in on an object and switching the stabilizer on and off demonstrates its worth. There are plenty of superfluous functions, such as a 360X digital zoom, (this can be switched off) and loads of pointless digital effects. But there are also really great features like wide screen capability, a stills button; the zoom can be used in playback mode and most importantly, DV in and out and Analogue in and out.

You can tell I love this camera, but even I will admit that there are shortcomings. The standard battery life is pathetic. There is an optional long life battery that promises 9.5 hours recording. Low light performance could be better. The lens whilst of good quality could do with less zoom and more wide angle. As it is, shooting in the average home is difficult.

For the price there is nothing that compares to the MV600i, both the picture and audio quality are superb. The features are excellent as are the ergonomics. In the end you even grow to love its quirky looks.

easy to use but flawed
I traded in my Panasonic DS29B for this - I wanted a
smaller camera with DV IN. After much research in
video magazines I went for the Canon.

I got DV IN and Small but... compared to the cheaper
Panasonic this is very slow to respond(focus and exposure),
not as good in low light, has a noisy motor(the Panasonic
was silent) and the zoom has a noisy clunk at each end if
you are not careful.

The good news is that it is much easier to use - the
big buttons are great, and the picture quality in good
light is excellent. For a first buy this would be a
great introduction to Video, but if you've used any
other video(digital or analog) you may be slightly
dissappointed - I am.

All you Need
It was a close-run thing. The equivalent Panasonic is smaller and over 100g lighter, but the Canon won on lens quality, optical zoom (x18!) and software.

The camera has everything you need for basic camcorder usage. There is no lamp, but the night mode is so effective that there is no need. As with all small, cheap camcorders, the sound is often obliterated by the wind, but is of sufficient quality when pointed in the right direction. The picture quality is excellent, with clear definition, excellent colours and fine clarity.

Linking with the PC has been seamless, and video editing is now half the fun. There is no memory card in this model, but if you want decent stills, buy a digital camera.
